History

Until 1904 trade in the Huon was conducted by barter or through exchange with the local stores. At Franklin, which was the main town of the district at that time, Kennedy’s Store provided a valuable service to farmers and growers who brought in their produce cheques for exchange into smaller cheques, payment of their "tab", and the change in silver. As the store never gathered as much silver as it gave in change, bags of cash were sent regularly from Hobart so that Kennedy’s could supply its customers.

In 1904 the district’s first bank, the Commercial Bank of Tasmania, opened in premises rented from Mr Thomas Casey. By 1906, the volume of business was such that it justified the building of the CBT’s own building, the substantial two storey brick building (now known as the Bowmont Centre) which now stands on the corner of Main and New Streets in Franklin. As the principal branch of the district, the bank operated agencies (called receiving houses) in Huonville, Castle Forbes Bay and Glen Huon. In 1921 Huonville Branch opened in its own right.
