STEPS NewsSuccessful job seekers help the local community. 22/10/2007 Every person who registers as a job seeker with Centrelink is asked to nominate a Job Network provider to register with. Some people do choose: others don’t make a choice, and are automatically directed to a provider at random. Job Network providers are contracted by the Australian Government to help job seekers prepare for, get and keep a job. Some agencies are private, some are community organisations. They are paid a modest set fee for each standard item of service, but also receive “outcome” payments – that is, reward payments for getting people into a job and keeping them there. Job Network providers may use that income in whatever way they wish. Some simply call it “profit”. Tasmania’s biggest Job Network provider, STEPS Employment and Training Solutions, puts its surplus funds back into helping the local community. Over recent years, STEPS has initiated and/or supported – and in many cases, funded – a wide variety of community projects with the goal of alleviating poverty and disadvantage (see our Community Solutions page, under the heading “About STEPS”). Most of these initiatives have been funded from the surplus STEPS has earned for successfully placing job seekers into work. As STEPS CEO, Ken Langston, says: “Every job seeker who gets a job through STEPS can give themselves a pat on the back – because they don’t only succeed for themselves; they have also given a helping hand to their local community.” |
