Nursery redevelopment under way   11/04/2008

The Riverside Community Nursery at Green Point, Bridgewater is starting to come alive again with keen input from a variety of local groups and individuals.

The nursery and community garden has been the centre for a host of activities in the past, but had fallen into disrepair over the last two years since the demise of the community organisation that was operating it.

Since STEPS took over the lease early this year, we have initiated a Work for the Dole project to rebuild the facility by repairing structures, clearing overgrown vegetation, salvaging a sizeable quantity of stock plants that had been neglected, and restoring old garden beds and creating new ones.

As well, other groups have started to use the facility. Bridgewater High School has recommenced a program including horticulture and basic construction skills. A program in which young people repair and rejuvenate old bicycles for donation to needy children, which used to operate from Pete’s Shed, is relocating here.

Several individuals have dropped by to volunteer their time and skills to help out on a regular weekly basis, and have been welcomed. Another Work for the Dole project crew, established to assist with the rebuilding of the nearby Vietnam Veterans’ Centre, comes in to lend a hand from time to time.

STEPS’ Manager, Community Solutions, Phil Leed, says: “Although it’s still early days, we can already see the life returning to the nursery, as it is gradually restored to a functional state. We want it to be a facility for the community to use – and the more uses it has, the better. The past couple of months have been a wonderful start.”
