Careers counselling sessions generally follow a six-step approach:

  • Self-Assessment through verbal, written or electronic personality profiling. (looking at values & interests and skills identification)
  • Research employment availability, career trends and various ways of information gathering. It could include researching what training might be needed and where this training might be available.
  • Decision making (looking at short and long-term personal and career objectives)
  • Networking (work search methods)
  • Job Search techniques (resume preparation, job applications letters, addressing selection criteria and interview preparation)
  • Evaluation (what is working well, what else can be tried)

Post Placement Support

  • Maintaining regular contact with clients who have found employment to provide support in keeping that employment.
  • Identifying situations where intervention may assist in keeping the job, or increasing part-time work to full-time work.
