New tenants happy in STEPS first housing project. 05/11/2007

At the beginning of September this year, the first tenants were introduced to eleven new housing units built by STEPS in Bligh St and Cumberland St, Warrane. After a few weeks, tenants are now settled and comfortable in their new homes.

Typical examples are Mr Jimmy and Mrs Patsy Smart (pictured). Mr and Mrs Smart have added their own personal touches inside and out, and told us they are "very happy" with their unit.

These units were the first major project in STEPS' mission to create new homes to add to the supply of affordable housing for people in Tasmania.

They were constructed by Wilson Homes, on land owned by STEPS, and financed by a unique partnership between STEPS, the Tasmanian Government and private capital invested through a unit trust. Investors included small superannuation schemes, a major community service provider in Colony 47, and individuals including some members of STEPS' own staff.

The nine 2-bedroom units and two 3-bedroom homes are within easy reach of the shops and services at Rosny Park.

STEPS Community Housing Solutions' target is to create up to 60 new affordable homes a year in Tasmania. We already have another 14 homes either under construction or about to commence, on various sites in Chigwell, Austin's Ferry and Bridgewater, and planning is well under way for more.
